Early December in Charlotte is always marked by the release of one of our favorite (and most adorably named) seasonal brews: Birdsong Brewing's "Puppies on Penguins." What used to only be available in bomber bottles is now available for you to enjoy in cans.

Read on to learn more about our local beer of the week, the brewery it came from, and the fitness activities they've got to offer Charlotte's active beer-lovers.

The Beer: "Puppies on Penguins"

"Puppies on Penguins" is a Belgian Abbey Ale aged in red wine barrels with hand-picked sweet cherries from Levering Orchard in Virginia. (Fun fact: the Belgian Abbey Ale used for the base of this beer was originally Birdsong Brewing's "The Pride," which has been temporarily discontinued.)

This 9.3% ABV brew is boozy and red wine forward, with hints of tartness from the cherries. Let it warm you up during the chilly winter evenings we have left in this Charlotte winter.

The Brewery: Birdsong Brewing

Birdsong Brewing is located at 1016 N. Davidson St. in Charlotte's up-and-coming Belmont neighborhood (right next to the beautiful McGill Rose Garden). They've got a whopping 17,000-square-foot building, complete with a new 30-barrel brewhouse and room for up to 1,200 barrels of fermentation capacity.

In terms of your visit: inside, there are plenty of tables and high-tops where you can catch up with friends over a pint or a flight. There are also tons of board games for you to play, if you're into that kind of thing (which we are).

Birdsong also has ample shaded outdoor space and tables where we can hang out with our pups, and there are cornhole boards to entertain you between rounds of beer. There's usually a food truck on site, but don't forget to grab some free peanuts to enjoy along with your brews, too.

The Beer Fitness Activities: Birdsong Yoga

Every Tuesday at 6:30 PM, NC Yoga Bar hosts a 60-minute yoga class with Birdsong Brewing. It's $10 for a walk-in, but if you buy a NC Yoga Bar passport, your cost can be as low as $5 -- which includes a 12 oz. Birdsong Brewing beer after class.

This is an all-levels flow good for both beginners and advanced yogis! Instructors will offer modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty of various poses throughout the class. In the spring and summer months, this takes place at the McGill Rose Garden; during the fall and winter months, it takes place in the private event room at Birdsong Brewing.
