Beer of the Week: Catawba Brewing Co., Peanut Butter Jelly Time
Feb 25, 2018
Close your eyes and think back to the last time you ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Maybe you're thinking back to your elementary school cafeteria, eating the delicious PB&J your mom packed in your cartoon lunchbox. Or maybe you had a random craving for the childhood favorite and whipped one up for yourself last week (we're not here to judge).
Well, just like peanut butter is the perfect partner for jelly, it turns out that PB&J is the perfect complement to beer—and Catawba Brewing Co. is here to prove it with our local beer of the week, "Peanut Butter Jelly Time."
Read on to learn more about our local beer of the week, the brewery it came from, and the fitness activities they've got to offer Charlotte's active beer-lovers.
The Beer: Peanut Butter Jelly Time
It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time, y'all! This Friday 3/2, Catawba Brewing Co. will release the traditional raspberry flavor of this PB&J-flavored specialty brew, along with four mouthwatering variations: concord grape, strawberry-rhubarb, blackberry, and one secret flavor that won't be revealed until the release party.
The base of this beer is a light and bready brown ale, brewed from five different grains. The beer is then aged for weeks on whole roasted peanuts and all-natural raspberry puree, making for a final product that truly tastes like a liquified peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a glass.
Be sure to stop by the release party on Friday to find out the surprise flavor, and to taste all four variations in a flight of 5 oz. pours! Bonus points if you show up in a banana suit.
The Brewery: Catawba Brewing Co.
Catawba Brewing Co. has four locations: one in Asheville's South Slope, one in the Biltmore Village area of Asheville, one in downtown Morganton, and one right here in Charlotte.
In the Queen City's Belmont neighborhood (right near Advent Coworking, Intermezzo, and Central Coffee) Catawba has a 10,000 sq. ft. taproom and brewery, open seven days a week. They also recently opened The Barrel Room at Catawba, a 4,300 sq. ft. private event venue located directly behind the brewhouse.
You have to check out their patio. It's got plenty of seating, an outdoor walk-up bar for you to order your beer from, a triad of hammocks for you to lounge in, and a gorgeous view of the Charlotte skyline.
The Fitness Activities: Run Club & Pop-Up Workouts
Catawba Brewing Co. Run Club is coming back for spring, summer, and fall, this time on Tuesdays! Starting on 3/6, you'll be able to get your miles in here every Tuesday at 6:30 PM. This club completes a five mile out-and-back route (which means that you can run any distance up to five miles—just turn around when you're ready to head back to the taproom). It's a totally free event, but runners are encouraged to stick around for a brew or two with friends.
Catawba also plays host to a variety of pop-up workouts, which you can keep up with on the Work For Your Beer calendar (as well as Catawba's Facebook events).
For instance, we'll be hosting Twerk For Your Beer ft. the Charlotte Ballet at Catawba Brewing Co. on Monday 3/5 at 6:30 PM! The class will be set to music from the Pet Shop Boys including some of the songs from the upcoming Charlotte Ballet performance of The Most Incredible Thing, a fairytale pop ballet. We'll also have a few special guests (including dancers from the Charlotte Ballet) dancing along with us. Just $8 gets you the class and a 10 oz. beer!
