Beer of the Week: Free Range Brewing, "A Big F.H."
Feb 17, 2018
You've probably seen Free Range Brewing's popular brown ale "Call Me F.H." on the beer list in the taproom on more than one occasion.
The story goes that the owner of Free Range Brewing called his now father-in-law "sir," and he didn't take kindly to it. His father-in-law told him, "You can call me by my first name, you can call me f--khead, but don't call me sir." And so, "Call me F.H." was born.
"Call Me F.H." is a 6.7% ABV brown ale, and Free Range used it as the base for our Beer of the Week, "A Big F.H." And boy, is that a delicious beer.
Read on to learn more about our local beer of the week, the brewery it came from, and the fitness activities they've got to offer Charlotte's active beer-lovers.
The Beer: "A Big F.H."
"A Big F.H." is an 11% ABV imperial brown ale brewed with Uncle Bob's maple syrup and Free Range Brewing's popular "Call Me F.H." brown ale as a base. This boozy brew is pleasantly sweet thanks to the maple syrup, but balanced by a niced malted roastiness from its brown ale base. Stop by the Free Range taproom to taste it for yourself!
The Brewery: Free Range Brewing
Free Range Brewing was opened by brothers Jeff and Jason Alexander in July 2015 in Charlotte's Villa Heights neighborhood, at the crossroads of N. Davidson St. and 27th St. Walk through the taproom doors and you'll see a bright, airy taproom and a friendly face to greet you from behind the bar. The brewery's motto, "Let your tastebuds roam," glitters in mosaic tiles behind a row of handmade wooden taps.
Free Range is all about cultivating community, which is one of the major reasons why they use as many local ingredients as possible when crafting their small batch brews. They also frequently feature the creations of other local artists and artisans, from North Carolina illustrators to small batch chocolatiers and beyond.
Most of the time, your best bet if you're looking to try Free Range beer is to come into the taproom; they like to keep things fresh, so they don't distribute their product too often. But you're always able to get a 32 oz. crowler of your favorite brew to go, if you want to enjoy it somewhere other than Free Range's own welcoming space.
The Beer Fitness Activities: Free Yoga (!!!) and Pop-Up Workouts
On Thursdays at 6:30 PM, you can make your way to the Free Range Brewing warehouse for a FREE 60-minute yoga class. Instructors rotate on a weekly basis between Allison Brewster, Kristen Witkowski, and Erica Kiely. This is an all-levels vinyasa flow, and usually the instructors offer modifications to make the flow more or less intense based on students' level of experience.
This class fills up quickly, so get there early! If you're not in the mood for a beer, Free Range has kombucha, shrub, and cold brew coffee on tap. There's also usually a food truck outside, so you can grab dinner to enjoy with your drink of choice.
Beyond yoga, Free Range also hosts pop-up workouts of all kinds, from swing dancing to barre to bootcamps and beyond. Be sure to follow them on social media to keep up with their ever-growing events list.
