Some people think that all cider is cloyingly sweet, reminiscent of green apple Jolly Ranchers or even just straight-up apple juice. Thankfully, that's not the case. Much like wine, ciders can range from dry to sweet in flavor, with all kinds of variations in between depending on the type of apples used and the brewing process.

If you're looking for a cider that's not too sweet, not too dry, but just right, then Goldilocks, we've got the answer for you.

The Drink: "North Meets South"

For those who prefer their cider with just a touch of sweetness, look no further than "North Meets South." Made with high-tannin, high-sugar apples from Poverty Lane Orchards in New Hampshire, then back-sweetened with fresh Stayman apples from North Carolina, the result is a refreshingly fruity, yet balanced 6.0% ABV cider. GoodRoad started the brewing process with a wild ferment, adding a smokiness that plays well with the tannins from the fruit. This semi-sweet cider has enough acidity to provide balance, while apple, peach and pear notes on the finish will leave you ready for another tasty sip.

The Cidery: GoodRoad Ciderworks

Conveniently located on Southside Drive in the heart of Lower South End (or LoSo, if you prefer—we don't), GoodRoad Ciderworks is just a short walk from the Scaleybark light rail stop.

You'll be greeted by a patio with twinkling string lights and picnic tables. Step inside to find a bright, airy taproom with large windows and high ceilings, along with walls of reclaimed wood for a cozy feel. Choose from 16 taps, featuring a wide variety of GoodRoad cider as well as local beers from nearby breweries.

And of course, beyond being Charlotte's second cidery, GoodRoad is the Queen City's first meadery. Be sure to sample some of their in-house meads, available in flights, by the glass, or to-go in growlers.
