Beer of the Week: Free Range Brewing, "Bob's Pure Intentions"
Sep 22, 2018
Coffee, toffee, chocolate, and nuts -- sounds like all the ingredients to make a perfect dessert, right? Well, we agree, but at Free Range Brewing, they’re also ingredients for a perfect beer!
Our local beer of the week intertwines sweet, savory, and nutty flavors to create a mouth-watering brown ale that has us ready for fall weather and beers by the fire. Read on to learn more.
The Beer: Bob's Pure Intentions
One of our favorite autumn beer releases, this Carolina brown ale from Free Range Brewing is infused with coffee beans from North Carolina’s own Pure Intentions Coffee. The coffee beans elevate the taste for a bold, roasted aroma that wakes up your senses! Toffee, coffee and chocolate notes are the stars of the show, but they’re complemented by a subtle berry, nutty finish. At 6.8% ABV (and 80% locally made!), it’s definitely a beer we’re craving this season.
The Brewery: Free Range Brewing
Free Range Brewing was opened by brothers Jeff and Jason Alexander in July 2015 in Charlotte's Villa Heights neighborhood, at the crossroads of N. Davidson St. and 27th St. Walk through the taproom doors and you'll see a bright, airy taproom and a friendly face to greet you from behind the bar. The brewery's motto, "Let your tastebuds roam," glitters in mosaic tiles behind a row of handmade wooden taps.
Free Range is all about cultivating community, which is one of the major reasons why they use as many local ingredients as possible when crafting their small batch brews. They also frequently feature the creations of other local artists and artisans, from North Carolina illustrators to small batch chocolatiers and beyond.
Most of the time, your best bet if you're looking to try Free Range beer is to come into the taproom; they like to keep things fresh, so they don't distribute their product too often. But you're always able to get a 32 oz. crowler of your favorite brew to go, if you want to enjoy it somewhere other than Free Range's own welcoming space.
The Activities: Free (!!!) Yoga
On Thursdays at 6:30 PM, you can make your way to the Free Range Brewing warehouse for a FREE 60-minute yoga class. Instructors rotate on a weekly basis. This is an all-levels vinyasa flow, and usually the instructors offer modifications to make the flow more or less intense based on students' level of experience. This class fills up quickly, so get there early!
If you're not in the mood for a beer, Free Range has kombucha, shrub, and cold brew coffee on tap. There's also usually a food truck outside, so you can grab dinner to enjoy with your drink of choice.
