Beer of the Week: Legion Brewing, "Beauty and the Beets"
Feb 21, 2019
Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme... Beauty and the Beets!
This annual female-brewed beer returns to the taproom this week, and it's hard to say whether it's best-loved for its beauty or its flavor profile. Read on to learn more about our beer of the week, the brewery that crafted it, and the fitness activities that they have to offer the Charlotte community.
The Beer: Beauty and the Beets
A wink to one of our favorite Disney movies featuring a badass female lead, "Beauty and the Beets" is a vibrantly pink 6.4% ABV saison brewed by the ladies of Legion Brewing along with Work For Your Beer co-founder Alicia. The brew gets its rosy hue and earthy, citrusy flavors thanks to beets from Barbee Farms in Concord, NC as well as zested mandarin oranges. Don't walk, run to this bright pink beer release at Legion Brewing this Saturday 3/2!
The Brewery: Legion Brewing
Legion Brewing was the first brewery to set up camp in Plaza Midwood two years ago, and it is now the first brewery to open in SouthPark! Legion's tagline is "Friends and Beer," and as a space, it's set up perfectly to enjoy both of those things.
At the original Plaza Midwood location, before you walk through the front doors of the brewery, you'll notice a cozy patio space set up with picnic tables, benches, umbrellas, and even a fire pit so that you can enjoy your brews in the great outdoors. Inside, you'll find an inviting taproom with 20 beer taps, as well as cider, wine, and kombucha to choose from. Through the double doors at the back of the taproom, you can also check out the mezzanine, where you'll overlook the production facility where the brewers are hard at work creating Charlotte favorites like Juicy Jay and Carolina Sparkle Party.
If you haven’t been to the new SouthPark location yet, you can expect almost triple the square footage and over double the taps. With 49 taps, 12,000 square feet, local spirits, a huuuuuge food menu, and the same friendly vibes, you'll fall in love with the new space from the moment you step inside.
The Beer Fitness Activities: The Legion-dary Run & Namastay at Legion
On Thursdays at 6:30 PM, you can join the free Legion-dary Run for a 4.4 mile route through Plaza Midwood, then stick around for a beer or two in the original taproom with the rest of the runners.
If yoga is more your speed, you can stop by the Plaza Midwood location on Sundays at 12:30 PM for Namastay at Legion, where $7 gets you the class and a beer. This class is taught by Luis, a bartender at Legion and a yoga instructor at Yoga One, Core Power Yoga, and Charlotte Yoga. It's an all-levels flow, so whether you're a beginner or a seasoned yogi, it will work for you! Luis offer modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty of a pose to fit your needs.
