Beer of the Week: Legion Brewing, "Oaktoberfest"
Sep 15, 2018
Fall may not be in the air, but it’s certainly at the bar! The seasonal taps are changing even before the leaves, and they aren’t looking back.
Legion Brewing’s newest Märzen-style lager is one you’ll be sure to find throughout the city this season—and it's one that is fall-inspired without being pumpkin spice flavored. Read on to learn more about our local beer of the week.
The Beer: "Oaktoberfest"
Legion’s beloved seasonal Märzen-style brew is a soft blend of vanilla and oak with a spicy, dry finish. This malty beer’s flavor is invigorated through aging on charred American oak. And at 5.0% ABV, it’s a drinkable Oktoberfest-inspired brew that’s built for sipping on cool autumn nights. Expect an autumnal flavor that will give the PSL a run for its money!
The Brewery: Legion Brewing
Legion Brewing was the first brewery to set up camp in Plaza Midwood two years ago, and it is now the first brewery to open in SouthPark! Legion's tagline is "Friends and Beer," and as a space, it's set up perfectly to enjoy both of those things.
At the original Plaza Midwood location, before you walk through the front doors of the brewery, you'll notice a cozy patio space set up with picnic tables, benches, umbrellas, and even a fire pit so that you can enjoy your brews in the great outdoors. Inside, you'll find an inviting taproom with 20 beer taps, as well as cider, wine, and kombucha to choose from. Through the double doors at the back of the taproom, you can also check out the mezzanine, where you'll overlook the production facility where the brewers are hard at work creating Charlotte favorites like Juicy Jay and Carolina Sparkle Party.
As of Thursday, September 19, Legion Brewing’s new SouthPark location is open to the public! If you haven’t been yet, you can expect almost triple the square footage and over double the taps! 49 taps, 12,000 square feet, local spirits, and the same friendly vibes make it feel like the original, only bigger. A dog-friendly patio rounds out the newly-opened space.
The Beer Fitness Activities: The Legion-dary Run & Namastay at Legion
On Thursdays at 6:30 PM, you can join the free Legion-dary Run for a 4.4 mile route through Plaza Midwood, then stick around for a beer or two in the original taproom with the rest of the runners.
If yoga is more your speed, you can stop by the Plaza Midwood location on Sundays at 12:30 PM for Namastay at Legion, where $7 gets you the class and a beer. This class is taught by Luis, a bartender at Legion and a yoga instructor at Yoga One, Core Power Yoga, and Charlotte Yoga. It's an all-levels flow, so whether you're a beginner or a seasoned yogi, it will work for you! Luis offer modifications to increase or decrease the difficulty of a pose to fit your needs.
