Meet Work For Your Beer Brand Ambassador: Matt Pena
Dec 01, 2018
When selecting brand ambassadors to join the Work For Your Beer team, we look for people who are eager to share their love of beer and fitness. Seeking individuals who are a part of the beer fitness community enables the us to have people who can confidently spread the word about what Work For Your Beer is and how to utilize the resources we offer.
Our brand ambassadors have similar passions, yet they all bring different skills, knowledge, and personalities to the table. We love highlighting our incredible brand ambassadors and letting them tell you in their own words why they choose to work for their beer -- and why you should, too.
Next up in our brand ambassador highlight series is Matt Pena.
Matt is constantly surrounded by fitness and always jumping at any opportunity to talk about fitness (and beer). You can find Matt teaching a class at Gold's Gym in the Epicentre, studying for his personal training certification, or spending time with his wife and friends. Since Matt has joined our team, he's been passionate about showing others what WFYB has to offer.

How did you first find out about Work For Your Beer? I’m 90% sure Mel saw a video of me doing burpees at Sycamore on Instagram and reached out to ask if I’d like to be part of the community. It was love at first flight. See what I did there?
What made you want to be a part of the Work For Your Beer community? Work For You Beer was a theme in my life before I even knew it was a company in Charlotte. I literally work for a beer company and strongly believe in life balance. It was meant to be that I get involved.
How long have you been attending fitness classes? I started taking hot yoga classes five years ago when I lived in Milwaukee. At the time, my body was telling me I needed to slow down, stretch more and focus on mobility. Throughout that experience I noticed how much of a community studios, specific classes, and even types of workouts can become in a city. I strongly encourage people to try fitness classes because you can pull from other participants’ energy and get to know great people with common interests.
What motivates you to work out? Exercise is an escape for me. Good music and a sweat is such a stress reliever. That feeling and being mindful of my body’s ability to move functionally is what motivates me!
What’s your go-to pump up song? ‘Till I Collapse - Eminem
What’s your favorite part of going to brewery fitness classes? I love to change up my routine. Taking new classes at breweries with different instructors and having beer as a reward after is the perfect equation for mixing things up.
What’s one thing you would want to tell somebody who was considering attending a brewery fitness class? Like I always say when I invite people to try my classes at @goldgymepi, “Whenever you’re ready.” Exercise should not be intimidating or stressful. We’re all humans that benefit from exercise and good times. Whenever you’re ready, head to a brewery, take a class that intrigues you, and have a drink after. That doesn’t sound like torture to me.
What’s your favorite beer (or ‘booch) in Charlotte? I’m a sucker for good beer with cool packaging. The CLT IPA from Catawba was an immediate favorite when I moved to Charlotte two years ago and hasn’t dropped out of my top three since.
Why do you love Work For Your Beer? Movement is so good for the human body. If people want to work out for a bit and have a beer afterwards, so be it! Walking to the brewery, taking class, and hanging out with people at a brewery in our beautiful city is so much better than sitting on the couch all night. I love that Work For Your Beer encourages people to get out and experience our city through beer and fitness.
