The Ultimate South Island NZ Itinerary: Where to Stay & What to Do

After an incredible time exploring New Zealand’s North Island, we made our way to the South Island for even more jaw-dropping landscapes, adrenaline-pumping activities, and (of course) fantastic craft beer. From Christchurch to Queenstown, here’s everything we did (plus some tips to help you plan your own adventure).

Christchurch: Exploring the Garden City

Where We Stayed: Little Cutie on Worcester (Airbnb)

Christchurch is a beautiful, walkable city with a mix of historic charm and modern energy. We spent our time here bouncing between art, adventure, and great food. We stayed at a cute Airbnb that was in walking distance to everything we needed in the city.

What We Did:

We were also supposed to zipline at Christchurch Adventure Park, but this was the only day we had bad weather during our entire trip, so it got canceled. We are planning on checking it out next time we are back!

Brewery Recommendation: Cassels Brewing Co.

For craft beer in Christchurch, Cassels Brewing Co. is a must. Their Milk Stout has won multiple international awards, and the atmosphere in their brewpub is cozy and inviting.

Shamarra Alpaca Farm: The Cutest Stop Ever

Between Christchurch and Lake Tekapo, we rented a car and stopped at Shamarra Alpaca Farm, and it was one of the best decisions we made. We got to cuddle, feed, and take selfies with the fluffiest alpacas ever—all while enjoying stunning views of Akaroa Harbour.

Travel Tip: Book in advance! This experience is popular, and spots fill up fast.

Lake Tekapo: Stargazing & Scenic Hikes

Where We Stayed: Tekapo Toi Toi (Airbnb)

Lake Tekapo is famous for its bright turquoise waters and dark sky reserve, making it one of the best places in the world for stargazing. We stayed at a quaint Airbnb that was in walking distance to the lake and the restaurants, grocery store, etc. in town.

What We Did:

  • Hung out at the lake – Perfect for relaxing and soaking in the unreal blue water

  • Drove to Mount Cook – We hiked the Hooker Valley Track, which took us past glaciers, swinging bridges, and stunning mountain views

  • Stargazed – The sky here is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Millions of stars, the Milky Way, and total serenity

Queenstown: The Adventure Capital of NZ

Where We Stayed: Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa

Queenstown is the ultimate playground for adrenaline junkies, and we definitely made the most of it. We decided not to stay in the heart of Queenstown and instead stay in a quieter part of town at the Hilton Queenstown Resort & Spa. You can take the water taxi into town, which was an adventure in itself!

What We Did:

  • Shotover Canyon Swing – This was so fun I did two jumps! The free-fall feeling is unreal, and this was one of my favorite memories from the trip

  • Kiwi Park Queenstown – A conservation park where you can see native NZ wildlife, including the adorable (and elusive) kiwi bird

  • Queenstown Ice Bar – A bar made entirely of ice, where you sip cocktails from frozen glasses! (I love an ice bar — the sculptures are wildly impressive, and it’s a fun way to mix up traditional drinking)

Brewery Recommendation: Canyon Brewing

Nestled by the Shotover River, Canyon Brewing is the perfect post-adventure spot. Their Alpine Amber Ale is smooth and flavorful, ideal for winding down after an action-packed day.

New Zealand’s South Island blew me away. Between breathtaking hikes, heart-pounding adventure sports, and some of the best stargazing I’ve ever seen, this leg of the trip was unforgettable.

If you’re planning a trip to NZ, make sure to check out both the North and South Islands — you won’t regret it! (Maybe you’ll even find me living in Christchurch in my lifetime…)

Cheers to amazing travel memories!
