An (Actually Doable) Guide to Staying Healthy Over Thanksgiving, According to an Expert

This content is brought to you in partnership with OrthoCarolina, one of the nation's leading orthopedic practices with offices across the Southeast.

The holiday season can certainly be a time of indulgence. Just close your eyes and picture Thanksgiving Day. Are you shoveling an excessive amount of carbs (mashed potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, rolls...) into your face? Are you guzzling wine as your distant relatives inquire about your relationship status? Are you lazing on the couch before and after the holiday dinner/the entire holiday weekend?

Even if you've exhibited some not-so-healthy holiday habits in the past, it really is possible to stay on top of your health and wellness goals over  Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday season.

We spoke with Meredith Bumgarner, an occupational therapist at OrthoCarolina, for the top 5 actually doable ways to stay healthy over the winter holidays.

1. Snack It Up

"Eat a small healthy snack before you go to Thanksgiving lunch or dinner so you aren't ready to eat the table right away," Bumgarner suggested. "You will make better choices and not eat as much! This could be something as simple as an apple."

2. Be Careful With Beverages

"Save some calories by drinking sugar-free drinks and water," recommended Bumgarner. "Even a glass of sweet tea can add up to 300 extra calories or 60 grams of sugar — yikes! If you are partaking in adult beverages, stick to a light beer or 'one mix, one liquor drinks' like a gin and tonic or a tequila soda."

3. Pick Protein

Sides are certainly tempting, but Bumgarner suggests that they shouldn't be the stars of the show.

"Fill up on protein! Turkey and ham are relatively low in fat and excellent sources of protein," she said.

4. All In Moderation

"Watch portion sizes. By all means, don't deprive yourself of Nana's famous casserole, but stick to moderation," Bumgarner added. "A half a cup or the size of the palm is a perfect size for casseroles and other sides."

The same goes for your beverages, of course! Moderation is key.

5. Keep It Moving

"Stay active!" Bumgarner advised. "This is by far the most important tip on the list. Make it a priority and set aside time to get your workouts in — even if it's just a brisk 30-minute walk!"
